Question by run_becky: How long do I have to starve myself before I lose weight?
I have been eating 25% of my usual intake for a week now and I have actually gained weight. It’s very frustrating as I am seriously craving a cheeseburger right now. I can’t diet I have tried the only thing that will work for me is to quit eating so much. I seriously need to lose weight and because I am so overweight I thought the pounds would fall off much faster than this.

You do not have to starve yourself to lose weight. In fact, starving yourself can be a symptom of an eating disorder. It’s not good, healthy, it won’t make you happy . . . It’s just not good. A simple way to think about losing weight is to remember that your body burns a specific number of calories a day. Calories are food energy, right? You eat food, take in calories, i.e. energy. The things you do throughout the day take energy, and so that’s how your calories are burned. You burn calories through a lot of daily activities, i.e. anything that takes energy. Walking around, running, standing, eating, talking, playing an instrument, all of these things burn calories, whether the amount is barely measurable or substantial. Exercise is a way to burn off even more calories than is normally burnt through natural functions and daily activities. Of course, exercise is also used to gain muscular strength and volume, respiratory/cardiovascular health, etc. . . The calories that you do not use are stored by your body, and this can increase your body fat. So if your intake of calories exceeds the amount you burn, you will get fatter. I would recommend you eat less calories, yes, but certainly not starve yourself. Along with your lower calorie intake, be sure to exercise. It’s that simple – just make sure your intake of calories is not over the amount of calories your body burns. The healthy way to ensure this would be to include exercise in your routine!!! Starving is not good. Your body isn’t meant to live like that, just think about it. It’s not really natural. Some bad things that could happen from self-starvation: muscle cannibalisation: your body could slowly eat away at your internal muscles and fat for nutrients, malnutrition, susceptible to diseases, bone decay, skin problems, bad posture . . In short- what happens to people who starve. It doesn’t really make a difference that you’re doing it to yourself on purpose, it’s still starvation! Also, if you think you might possibly have an eating disorder, consult a professional or a qualified person for help. You might have a distorted body image. I’m just trying to cover all of my bases here, please don’t be offended.
I hope I helped! Good luck!
